“A surprisingly difficult climb from sea level to the village of Mordati.
”
From the coastal road (Hwy 90), begin climbing through piney scrubland on this gravel road. When you reach an intersection before the new main A90 road, take the tunnel under the road and continue climbing on the other side. You'll pass through several olive groves before entering more piney scrubland.
This takes you to an outcropping of newer houses on the outskirts of the village of Mardati and the paved Agios Nikolaos - Kroustas road. If you look back along the way, you'll have intermittent views of the Gulf of Mirabello on the north side of Crete.
