Features Commonly Bikepacked

Family Friendly It's a wide trail with plenty of space for bikes and people.

Closed for winter.

Description

The trail starts off with a small climb to access some of the great views of the Truckee River you'll find along the way. You'll see the train pass by at times and you'll be along the freeway for a lot of the trail. There is a hanging bridge that you'll go through. Heading south (as mapped) involves a lot of climbing, but the return trip is fun and almost all downhill. The trail is mostly dirt with some parts of gravel road.

Ride is officially closed due to construction on the flumes. But lots of bikes seem to be riding it on the weekends when the job site is shut down.

Nice and easy doubletrack. Some moderate climbs. I wouldn’t rate it “black diamond” . Enjoy the beautiful view of the truckee river.

Starting from Verdi and riding toward Floriston is a little intimidating, because there are some scrappy and repetitive climbs that may have you walking your bike. Approaching River Rock climbing area, you descend a fairly stiff hill that is not tempting to ride back up. We passed someone who decided she wasn't up for it and turned back. But press on! Riding back to Verdi is not nearly as energetic, and goes really quickly. NOTE! This ride is technically closed as of Fall 2018 due to construction work on the power plant flume. There's heavy equipment all over the section from Verdi to River Rock, and the road is narrow with nowhere to get out of the way. Lots of riders seem to be ignoring the closure on weekends when the work site is shut down, but it would be dangerous to trespass and try to do this ride when they are working. 5 days ago
