You'll need a state trail pass to use both the Cheese Country and Pecatonica trails.

Description

This 10-mile rail-trail travels between Belmont and Calamine. It follows a branch of the old Milwaukee Road corridor that once hauled lead through the valley here.

The trail twists and turns on a downhill trend along the slow waters and crooked banks of the Bonner Branch of the Pecatonica River.

The route is a great place to see wildlife, especially birds. Keep an eye out for sand hill cranes, red-wing blackbirds, red-necked grebes, great blue herons and bobolinks.

On the eastern end of the trail, it's possible to connect with the Cheese Country Recreation Trail.
