A nice loop trail with loads of climbing in the Rolling Ridge Retreat area.

Mark Hoyle

Description

Closed October 1 through December 31 for hunting. Don't ride here then!
This is a really nice, challenging loop trail that is tight, rocky, steep, and simply loads of fun. The climb feels like it goes on forever, and then goes on some more. Once you come in on the Cart Path Connector and Ridge to River Trail from the Shenandoah University Cool Springs Campus, you'll see a sign that says Perimeter Trail on your left. Continue straight on the doubletrack; you are on the Perimeter Trail loop riding counter clockwise, the recommended route.

The turn off the doubletrack onto the singletrack is easy to miss. After you intersect with another doubletrack road, almost immediately look for the Perimeter Trail to veer off, by a gate, to the left. There should be a black diamond sign on a tree, but it is hard to see. If you cross the creek, you went to far.

You are now on singletrack for the rest of the ride and the climbing will soon begin. Once you go out under the power lines, climb, climb, climb until you see a trail go off to the left. This is Grand Boulevard and you are over half way up. You can cut off left here and follow Grand Boulevard until it interests with Perimeter Trail again, but what's the fun in skipping more climbing... and the amazing descents!

The next turn off is a singletrack trail with a black diamond again. Don't worry, you'll not be going too fast uphill to miss it! Get on this sweet singletrack and continue the climb. After a while, you come to a face that is very very steep... you guessed it, go UP! Continue and there are some nice rock gardens, all rideable, and more climbing.

When you get to the top, there is a small clearing with some rock stacks and it is time to descend! Go down and have fun on this fast, flowing and 100% rideable section. After the descent, you'll continue along crossing two creeks and follow back to where you started.
