Overview

A combination that links the Newberry Crater Rim Trail and Swamp Wells (Trail 61). This route takes you from Paulina Peak (7900') to Horse Butte (4100').

Need to Know

It is recommended to do this as shuttle ride.

Description

Starting from the Paulina Peak Parking Lot follow the road down to the Newberry Crater Rim Trail on the left. Continue on this trail until you hit the Swamp Wells (Trail 61), about 13.7 miles from the start. The trail downhill is a bit more rustic but passes through some amazing scenery, lava flows, sand flats, thick wooded terrain, and into the high dessert.

The general direction is downhill but expect another 1,500 ft of climbing traversing several buttes to the bottom. The payout is the amazing view from the peak and the fast 8-mile singletrack section at the bottom of Swamp Wells (Trail 61).
