Update

A forest road that provides a nice ride and access to many singletrack trailheads.

Overview

Description

Canaan Loop Road (FS13) as mapped here starts out paved and passes through Blackwater Falls State Park. As it passes the Lindy Point trailhead, it becomes a rough jeep track for several miles.

Relative to the type of riding in this area, these sections are moderate, but there are stream crossings and the road can be muddy with large puddles and there are a few rocky bits in short stretches. As it continues, it becomes a well-maintained dirt/limestone-covered road that climbs up to the Plantation and Table Rock trailheads, then descends to run alongside Red Run for a bit where it starts climbing, at times steeply, until it terminates at a junction with Highway WV32.

The loop road sees limited car traffic, it provides important access to singletrack trailheads, and it is a very nice ride in either direction with the aforementioned challenges at one end.

Nice gravel grind. First four miles out of park are almost mtb rough, but rest is fine on a drop bar bike with decent tires. Beautiful fall colors. 25mi — 2h 30m

Excellent gravel grinder. First four miles out of the park are a bit rough, but rest of the ride is perfect for a cyclocross bike. Don't forget to stop for Burritos at Hellbenders on the way back through town. Oct 8, 2017
