Family Friendly: This section is relatively flat and easy tread, great for kids or other novices.
Dogs: Off-leash

Description

This trail is the first 5 miles of a longer trail that was built upon an abandoned railroad grade that runs from Twain Harte up to the community of Strawberry. Along the way, this portion of trail will pass the community of Sugar Pine, and the Lyons reservoir. This relatively flat trail winds its way through conifer forests, moving along on an easy doubletrack with the hillside high above the canyon below. Sweeping views of the surrounding mountains can be had at several locations along its route.

This trail is open to all non-motorized users so there is a possibility of hikers, dog-walkers and maybe some equestrian traffic as well. Please be courteous to all trail users, and remember the cyclists should give the right of way.

As of 6-2017, there is a major washout across the trail at mile 4. PG&E will likely have this repaired because they use the road for primary access to the reservoir. If you don't mind carrying your bike a hundred feet over trees placed as a barricade then this will be a minor inconvenience. Will update post upon revisiting and if repaired.
