The Alpha track is an easy climbing track that rises through numerous switchbacks to 510m ASL on the ridge at the top of Silvan Forest. There are some slightly steeper sections in places, but the gradient is generally easy. Alpha forms a backbone for a number of intermediate level downhill tracks. Alpha can be ridden in both directions although there are separate up and down segments above the top of Exodus
For convenience, the track has been given names for various segments. Starting from the carpark, it is just called Alpha, then once it crosses the first forest road it becomes Alpha Tahi as far as the next road crossing near the bottom of Spittrock when it becomes Alpha Rua.
The trail then climbs in a series of switchbacks above an open area known as The Arena, past the top of Hare Down
to cross a major forest road right by the top of Spittrock. After crossing the road, there is a long stretch called Alpha Toru that winds up the hill to another major forest road where there are entrances to Peoples Choice, Six-Foot-Five and Ezra Mamaku.
It continues across this road as Alpha Wha to the crest of the hill and top of Silvan Forest, which is also the top of Peoples Choice and where Six-Foot-Five is ultimately planned to start. (For non-Kiwis Tahi, Rua, Toru, Wha is Maori for 1, 2, 3, 4). Peoples Choice and Six-Foot-Five are named in memory of Kelly McGarry, a native of the nearby town of Wakefield and a Red Bull Rampage legend.
