Family Friendly Popular family destination. Summer concerts, mansion tours, paved trails for walking, bicycles, roller blading, Open fields popular for frisbee, model airplanes/drones are all appealing for families.

Open year round, park closes at dusk.

Description

This trail has its beginning slightly uphill of the off-leash dog play area on the paved access trail. Proceed north on the doubletrack access trail and you'll soon come to the spit in the loop--this detail will proceed turning left and riding the loop clockwise but the trail is equally entertaining in either direction.

At the first fork take the left but remain inside the forest--the blue trail proper follows the edge of the forest in the field but the unmarked trail just inside the tree line is the accepted mountain bike path--it's much more playful than riding in the grass. this will meet up with the foot trail within 200 meters. Enjoy the swoops, roots and small bumps.

There are several small stream crossings on this route, even in wet weather there's nothing even knee-deep. Generally, these crossings can be stepped over or ridden over (or even casually jumped) without getting a shoelace wet. Size them up as you come to them, but do not let the me dissuade you--they look worse "on paper" than they are in real life.

Top side of the loop features a half-mile long, 115 foot gentle-but-steady climb that slowly increases to a steady 8% grade, a good lung and leg trainer.

Obstacles vary, mostly rocks and roots small in size but some of Hartwood's optional Medium/large logs and rocks adjoining the trail sides. Keep your eyes open for the popular ones.

"Big Blue Logs" are one of the few medium obstacles at Hartwood that do not have an opt-out trail. Being well traveled and super solid, these look much scarier to beginners than they actually are.

A stream crossing on the Blue Loop is shallow even in wet season. This one has a rocky bottom, Which makes it slightly technical but very rideable for beginners with good balance.
