When you don't have enough time to spend the day, bailing at the "9" provides a really good ride that includes many of the most cherished trails on the ranch.

Using the overlay you can read about each trail included in this loop.

This ride includes a great taste of the trails for those who want a shorter ride at the ranch.

You still get that long, heart-thumping climb at the start and many traditional favorites like Off The Lip (OL) and Karaway (KW) while keeping to a tighter schedule.

This route is also great if you want to take a couple of rides with a break in between. Ride this loop first and pick up other trails after lunch.

History & Background

Grey and Pam Hill created Rocky Hill Ranch in 1993 and opened it up to mountain bikers and other trail users. It soon became known as one of the first and best mountain bike ranches in Texas. The Hills left ranch operations to a number of lease-holders over the years. After starting and operating a successful business on the Texas coast they have headed for the highlands and are actively running Rocky Hill Ranch again.

This is the second oldest MTB Ranch in Texas. Nearby Bluff Creek Ranch at Warda is the oldest.

As told by Grey Hill, the Fofenique Indians were relocated near here at Camp Fofenique. A trail on the ranch bears the name to commemorate this historical tidbit.
(all in jest, Campho-phenique is actually a cream for sore muscles).

RHR is one of the first private trail systems for mountain bikes in Texas, and remains one of the best. While the changes over the last two decades+ I've been going there have seen the rise and fall of concessions and amenities, it's still the place with rocks and roots, tight trails and fenceline dashes; Fat Chuck's Demise and Off-the-Lip; sliding through rainy races or eating that faster person's dust. Gone are the days my group played hookie from work and drove up to ride the day away; as well as my racing days (too much training, not as much fun); but this remains one of the premier destinations in Texas trail riding.
