Description

Continental Divide Trail from Bannock Pass follows Grizzly Hill Road #012 briefly before following singletrack up to the ridge and the border between Idaho and Montana. Look for a CDT placard about 1/4 mile from Bannock Pass marking the start of the trail.

From this point to Grizzly Hill and the microwave tower "Comm Site" the trail climbs steadily, is wooded and often difficult to follow, but follows along the Idaho side of a border fence. Look ahead for blazes on the trees where the trail is not obvious. There are a couple of ring latch gates to cross through as well.

Once at Grizzly Hill, the trail crosses to the Montana side, follows the fence briefly, gets markedly better in condition, and generally descends. From here to Goat Mountain is a great section of trail both in its condition and for the stunning views of Goat Mountain and Idaho's Lemhi Range.

The trail emerges from the woods and crosses the open, almost alpine, head of Little Eightmile Creek. The CDT here sees very little use and can be overgrown. The CDT crosses through another ring latch gate at the saddle and begins climbing with occasional switchbacks. Do not follow the two-track that follows the crest of the Divide unless you enjoy hike-a-bike.

The climbing continues with the trail crossing to the Montana side to Goat Mountain then meandering up and down and across the Divide until it ends at CDT: Goat Mountain to Lemhi Pass (MT Section 8). The CDT continues along this two-track for another 13 miles to Lemhi Pass.
