Overview

A great valley-to-knoll ride that begins with a mellow warm-up before climbing to fantastic 360º views of Sugarloaf and the Bigalow Mt. Range that are best paired with a stop at the Stratton Brook Hut. This out-and-back ends with a fun and flowing descent that makes for a grand dessert to the day's ride.

Need to Know

Maine Huts & Trails, Stratton Brook Hut provides full-service food, beer, and lodging. They accept credit cards and cash. No dogs allowed in the hut.

Description

From the Campbell Field parking area, head north on the Rt 27 Connector #102 to cross the Carrabassett River. On the other side, immediately take a left onto Mike's Mile 59 and enjoy a nice pedal that hugs the river until the intersection of the Narrow Gauge Trail. Turn left and then take your next right to start a gradual climb on Newton's Revenge.

Pretty soon, riders will reach the bottom of Oak Knoll. This twisting trail is fairly steep for the first half-mile but it eventually backs off as it continues ascending up and around the low knoll crowned by the Stratton Brook Hut. To get to the views and libations ahead, take a right on Cromits Overlook and follow it to the hut.

Settle in to enjoy your surrounding and order some food or drink. When ready, head back down Cromits Overlook and take the left onto the top of Oak Knoll. It's time to cash in on all that climbing and enjoy nearly 2.5 miles of fun and flowing good times that Oak Knoll serves up. At the bottom, turn right on Newton's Revenge, then left on the Narrow Gauge Trail. Finally, turn right back onto Mike's Mile 59 to enjoy a cool down before crossing the river back to the parking area.
