If done counter-clockwise, Craigs Road is a very challenging climb due to its constant grade. Much of the ride is fire road, maybe 70%. Some good singletrack, although short sections - last mile, and about 0.5 around mile 4, and 0.8 to 1.8. Mesa Peak has great views, and a cool ocean breeze in summer. At about mile 3.5 you can go back into a canyon where there is a small lake/swimming.
Need to Know
Bring about $8 cash for parking within park.
If you park in the park, its about 0.8 miles on pavement to get back to singletrack trailhead. Mile 12 to 13.5 is steep fire road descent. Bring plenty of water for the climb! There are a couple offshoots down to the coast I have never tried yet. Last 0.25 mile on road back to park- plenty of dirt on west side of road.
History & Background
Mile ~4.7 is where they filmed MASH. Ambulance and some other memorabilia are there.
