Overview

A lollipop loop parallel to the Kokopelli Trail on the mesa overlooking Rabbit Valley utilizing the Overlook, Western Mesa, and Arch Loop.

Need to Know

All Rabbit Valley trails are opened to motorized use. There are moto "whoops" along much of the route. These will test even the most patient rider's tolerance of our motorcycle brethren.

The loop as ridden incorporates a bailout back to Kokopelli Trail near the primitive campground. Riders with the gumption can finish the loop through the campground to extend the singletrack.

Description

The best access to the ride is from I70 at the Westwater exit #227 just west of the Colorado, Utah border. 1/4 mile from the exit along Harley Dome Road (BLM 192) take the first left turn onto a doubletrack through a light industrial area. After 1/2 mile the doubletrack forks. Go right and in another 1/2 mile, the road intersects the Kokopelli Trail at another fork.

This is a good place to park if driving a low-clearance vehicle, and is the beginning of the description. Ride east on Kokopelli Trail on this fork for 1/4 mile, passing through a three-way intersection where the Kokopelli Trail climbs from Rabbit Valley to the left. The Overlook trail begins on the left side of the doubletrack about 800' beyond the Kokopelli Trail climb from Rabbit Valley.

After passing through a primitive campground, ride 6 miles south along the rim on Overlook to a saddle with a steeply descending road on the left (east). Continue south through the saddle onto the Western Mesa trail continuing along the rim. Just keep close to the rim on the left and the singletrack will be obvious. Ride South 2 miles to the southern tip of the rim at the Westwater overlook.

The trail continues west along the rim, a little more looping. When the trail returns north to a doubletrack 3 1/2 miles past the overlook, go left (north) and take the first left spur onto Arch Loop.

The trail crosses a small natural bridge in the first half mile then continues a 2 mile long winding route (passing a left tee leading to the intersection of Harley Dome and BLM 191 - Kokopelli Trail) back to the saddle between Overlook and Western Mesa trails.

From here, turn left and ride back north on Overlook. Overlook will wind south around a viewpoint, then continue north along the rim. Near the next major change in direction to the west, Overlook begins to parallel very closely to Kokopelli Trail. Should the moto whoops get tiresome, bail out at any time onto Kokopelli Trail, which will lead back to the beginning of the loop.

Near the end of the ride, where Overlook turns to the east, cross to Kokopelli Trail on the left rather than climb back to the primitive campground ridden through early in the ride. If one is so inclined, continue back east on the singletrack, away from Kokopelli Trail and continue on to the end of the singletrack near where Kokopelli Trail climbs out of Rabbit Valley. The vehicle will 1/4 mile down Kokopelli Trail on the rim.
