Description

Riverview Trail starts at Beechwood Blvd. opposite Nicholson St., adjacent to Blue Slide Park and loops below the off leash dog shelter.

You can access Roller Coaster and many of the other fire roads from here via the Riverview Extension Trail and Firelane Trail Extension. Use caution on the wooden bridges on this trail, they are extremely slippery when wet.

South end of Horse Trough Trail has no signage, but starts just above the Lower Riverview sign, next to the two trees bathing in the sun.

Black raspberry (Rubus Occidentalis) bushes have thorns and bluish-white stems which are red if scratched. Not Poison Ivy, although leaf shapes are somewhat similar. It should be noted that City of Pgh uses TorDon for seasonal herbicide = not food-safe.

Hercules Club aka Devil's Walking Stick. Don't try to lean on one of these. This one is about 2" in diameter, and also has spikes sticking up between its opposite leaves. This plant is kind of a jerk.

Mile-a-minute weed (Persicaria perfoliata) is a vigorous, barbed vine that smothers other herbaceous plants, shrubs and even trees by growing over them.

There is a short-very interesting section that is clearly entirely landfill from past construction projects, reminiscent of the yellow brick road.

Looking towards the tree tunnel a bit further into the meadow. The trail zig zags along a contour line flanked with established trees mostly 10-12 inches in diameter.
