Description

The start of four rocks may not be obvious to find, but it's worth the look. To get to the start, go south on Salamanca Rd from either Little Rock City Road or the southern end of Bent Rim. Or alternatively you may be coming north on Salamanca Rd if you have just climbed up Dead Scout trail.

There is an unnamed dirt road (called on this site "approach to four rocks" that heads uphill to the east. From this road you get a good view of the forest to the north courtesy of a recent timber harvest clearing the view. At the end of this short segment, don't stop. You'll see a haul road at the end (a little bit to the right) and start down that. After only a hundred feet or so, the true four rocks trail starts as a sharp left turn into the woods.

You will soon find there are a lot more than four rocks on this trail (the specific four are hard to describe in text, but if you see four big slabs where you could string together a line next to the singletrack, that's them).

The trail starts out downhill which helps when the going gets rough. But it soon heads north and goes by all sorts of interesting terrain from big boulders to creek crossings, and log overs. If you can get your eyes off the next obstacle long enough, there is a nice view through the woods downhill to your right. Soon it levels off a little and a faint trail may be seen off to the right if it hasn't overgrown all the way yet. Skip that and start heading uphill. The first hundred yards or so has been cleaned, but still requires lots of balance and momentum as you climb through the rocks. Fortunately this is a climb that gets easier as it goes, and soon you are pretty much flat. That tells you you are close to the end.

Strangely enough, the trail goes right through a campsite at the Little Rock City area, so watch out for that and say "hello" while you pedal through.
