The trail begins on Prospect Trail at a post. The first third of the trail contours along an historic flume. After 0.4 miles the trail forks. The right fork leads to Minnie Mine and the left fork with a post climbs as a continuation of Side Door.
The trail climbs for 1/2 mile along a primitive, historic mining road before reaching another fork at a post. The right fork is the original trail and road alignment leading to an excellent view point.
The left fork is the newly built Side Door extension. The extension climbs for another mile through a number of switchbacks to Prospect Hill Road.
At Prospect Hill Road, turn around and return down Side Door for a fast and furious descent, or continue into the Golden Horseshoe.
