Description

Start at multiple locations throughout Stone Park, parking at either the top of the hills on the east end, or the bottom of the trails on the west side. Be ready to climb as this park is located entirely within the Loess Hills of Iowa, an area famous for rolling hills created over millions of years by the growth of the Missouri River.

Doubletrack trails are usually about three feet wide and the trail itself is not very technical at all. The real challenge comes from the climbing, which can be long and enduring, but rewarding for sure.

Numerous wildlife can be seen in the park, include turkeys, white-tailed deer galore, and numerous birds of all types. The park maintains a natural composition with limited modern amenities along the trails, adding to the serene nature of the park.

A nice ride if you know what the trail is. It is not really singeltrack. It is really doubletrack, and primarily a horse trail. 6.4mi — 45h 19m

A nice ride if you know what the trail is. It is not really singeltrack. It is really doubletrack, and primarily a horse trail. Given those parameters, it is a really nice trail. Some killer hills to climb. Some great scenery with everything from awesome sunset vistas, to beautiful oak forest valleys. The biggest disappointment was it was very leafy when I was there. Therefore I was not comfortable just flying down the steep hills, which would have been a blast if visibility was better. With the steep hills and the horse usage, of course some sections are eroded. But really only slightly, and they seem to be staying on top of it. All in all a great workout. Some nice scenery. And a good ride if you are in the area. Hard to rate the trail, because it is never less than 5' wide, but grades exceed 20%. Oct 25, 2015
Nice park but it's more of a horse trail if anything. Bacon Creek Trail is a far better option. Jun 15, 2016
Horses often use these trails. Take that into consideration. Other than that, all of the trails we have used have been beautiful. I feel physically challenged whenever we hike there. Aug 29, 2016
