A good workout on a 3 mile climb with a quick return downhill to the parking area.

Leslie Kehmeier

Overview

Closed to bikes for a few days after a rain. Call the county trails hotline for closure info.
There is a long moderate 3.0 mile climb from the Hacienda parking area to the upper intersection with the Castellero Trail at Bull Run. Add the short loop of the April Trail off Mine Hill Trail for some old mining structures. There is a closed mine shaft at the Cristobol Mine off Mine Hill Trail.

There are wonderful views of the mountains from the Castellero Trail.

Description

This ride is a short loop compared to the longer Mine Hill - Randol Trail loop. It's also the alternate route when Randol is closed in the winter. While the tread is easy, beginners usually hate the climb. It's also rare that you'd see kids on bikes here.

The whole ride is on county park dirt roads that provided a challenging climb and fantastic views! And at the top of the loop, all the climbing is reward with a long downhill run. Just keep in mind that rangers do enforce the 15 mph speed limit, so watch your pace.

Look for mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, turkeys, and the ever present deer. Often many wild flowers in the spring and early summer.

History & Background

This trail encircles Mine Hill and there is plenty of evidence of the old mining days. Off Castellero there is a resort and a few buildings left at English Town.
