Loop at Mint Springs

Adopt These Trails!

Overview

Albemarle County Park Rules Apply
This ride is a 45 minute or so loop at Mint Springs Park outside of Crozet. There is about 6 miles or so of multi-use trails at this park and this ride covers almost all of the loop. There are a couple of difficult climbs if your not use to that and some technical rock/root sections as well as some fast downhill.

Need To Know

Because this is a county park multi-use trail you'll see lots of hikers at times and need to use caution and GOOD MANORS on the trail. Most traffic is on the weekends but during the week toward evening you may not see anyone. Be on the lookout for dogs not on a leash, deer, and yes...sometimes a Bear..

Description

This ride and Mint Springs are not big and have just enough terrain challenges and climbs to make it interesting and a good work out if you are on limited time and need something close. I would not recommend Mint Springs are this particular ride to beginners/novices because of the climb and small technical roots and rocks.

I don't want to scare anyone but the roots and rocks can be intimidating if you have never ridden this terrain with some elevation. The good thing is the technical portions and climbs are not long and IF you want to start learning how to ride with more challenges this would be a good place to begin...Like any trail use good judgment and WALK if you need.

If is worth mentioning that the trails are mostly singletrack hiking trails that are nice and wide enough for biking. There are not a tremendous amount of people who ride here so hikers are not used to bikers in many cases. PLEASE keep this in mind and check your speed on descents...there are some blind spots and potential for an accident exists. Children and elderly walk some of these trails and I have witnessed our less intelligent biking colleagues treat the downhills like their own personal bob-sled run.

There is very mininal trail maintenance and I dont think the local bike club is much interested in this county park as a bike venue. Most of the attention goes to Walnut Creek and Preddy Creek. Trees and branches get moved by park services and individuals. There is also a nice swimming lake, camp grills, and bathrooms.

History & Background

There are a couple of old homestead fireplaces and nice views on this ride...Apple and peach orchards close by. Crozet is a fun little town and a couple of nice restraunts and bars in town.
