One of THE best XC courses in Texas - it's a blast to ride!

Richard Mills

Overview

Flat Rock Ranch is located just a few miles from Comfort, TX, in the Hill Country of central Texas. Being just under an hour from San Antonio, only 1.5hrs from Austin, and about 3 hours from Houston, this makes it pretty convenient for a weekend getaway.

The town of Comfort is better known for its antique stores, historic main street, and more recently, one of the best Pizza shops in Texas! It is also in the heart of Texas wine country. However, one of the best kept secrets is that it also has arguably one of the best mountain bike trails in the state.

Flat Rock Ranch is easily accessible by car on a paved road that takes you all the way to the property boundary. Inside the fenceline its a short dirt road, but is well maintained. Its also close enough to the town of Comfort, that you could easily stay in Comfort, and ride out to the park (about 6 miles or so).

Typical of most mountain bike trails in the Texas Hill Country, the landscape has limestone cliffs and rocks, and spectacular views over the surrounding area.

Need to Know

Flat Rock Ranch is a private mountain bike ranch, open 7 days a week. They do close for hunting season however (Oct-Dec) - see their website below for more details.

Description

Starting from the main car park, there are effectively two sides to the park, divided by a (normally) dry creekbed. The trails lead through typical hill country terrain, with spectacular views, hill climbs, long downhill sections, technical singletrack, and several creek crossings. Theres a total of 27 miles of trails the featured ride shown here is 19 miles long, and was the course used for the 2013 TMBRA Cat2 XC race.

After you're done riding for the day, take the short drive back to Comfort for some of the best Pizza in the country at Comfort Pizza on High Street :)

History & Background

The ranch consists of 1,300 rugged acres that has been owned by the same family for over 100 years. Apart from operating as a mountain bike ranch, they also raise Black Angus cattle and Angora goats.
