Sweet ridge riding with some exposure and killer views.

Description

Dragon's Back is a south to north route that features gradual climbs and descents along a mesa-top ridge. The trail is fairly smooth with a couple of more difficult sections here and there. At times the route can become narrow and bumpy in places. Stay focused in these sections as you'll feel a bit of exposure as well.

Beware of the deep sink hole type features that form when there are cracks in the underlying gypsum. They're cool to look at but probably bad to try and ride through! A steep loose descent finishes this section of trail, ending in a notch where you can either continue along the ridge or drop down to the left on the Dragon's Back Connector.

I have ridden this twice. Loved it both times. Drove from Taos to ride here after South Boundary and Horsethief. Well worth going out of the way. before heading East. TAKE WATER! None available on site. Nov 22, 2014

This is one of the most scenic desert landscapes of New Mexico! Its a great run for folks living in Santa Fe or Albuqueruque who need to get out for a day! Don't try this during the spring winds, bring plenty of water. This trail has all kinds of geological features and vistas of the Jemez and Sandias! Many large dinosaurs were found in this area of the Ojito wilderness. I highly recommend this 3-4 hour ride! Feb 23, 2015

Totally unique trail. Exposure is not too extreme, but beginners will want to take it real easy. Trail does have one hike section but it is worth the overall experience. Aug 21, 2018
