Coming soon to MTB Project
See where riders actually ride.
Ride Heatmaps overlay real ride-density data on the map so you know which trails are busy, which are quiet and which are genuinely popular.
Right now, you're riding blind.
- You have no idea where other riders go.
- You can't tell which trails are busy and which are quiet until you're already there.
- "Popular" ratings don't mean it's good to go in real life. See what's been ridden recently.
- Other heatmaps focus on roads. We focus on singletrack.
Ride Heatmaps change that.
- Pick the right trail with confidence.
- Find the hidden-gem routes that locals ride.
- Avoid the crowds when you want solitude.
Real ride data, powered by mountain bikers like you
This is what it looks like on a real trail network.
Warm colors mark the trails riders hit most, cool and white mark the routes that stay quiet.

We're building Ride Heatmaps around how mountain bikers want to use it. Tell us what you'd want from it. If you're up for a quick call, you'll be talking directly with Simon, MTB Project's General Manager.
Questions
What you're probably wondering.
- When does Ride Heatmaps ship?
- We're validating the concept with riders right now. Target ship is early 2027. Everyone on the early access list gets first access.
- How is ride density calculated?
- From anonymized GPS tracks recorded during rides on MTB Project and the onX Backcountry app. The more rides on a trail, the "hotter" the line becomes.
- Do I need to record every ride for it to work?
- No. Heatmaps are built from riders who choose to track their rides. You'll see the overlay whether or not you record.
- Will other people see my personal rides?
- No. Heatmaps are aggregated and anonymized. Nobody can see where you've been riding.
- Who's behind this?
- Ride Heatmaps is built by the team behind MTB Project and onX Maps, riders who wanted this for our own trips out. The community's ride data is what powers it and makes it better for all of us.
