Mt. Hough climb

If there are any local Quincy CA riders reading this, can you tell me if it's recommended to ride the Mt Hough single track up to the top or do most people ride up the Mt. Hough road to the summit? I rode this trail for the first time last week but I climbed the road to the top (long, hot, and boring) and it seemed to me in retrospect that it would have been more interesting and perhaps less hot if I had climbed the single track.  Any issues with this approach or has the trail become known more as a downhill?  I'm thinking that because the ride down is so ripping fast on the descent there could be some scary encounters with downhillers.  Any comments?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
