Soldiers Delight Nature Environment Area
Overview
Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area is a unique serpentine barren with over 39 rare, threatened, or endangered plant species as well as rare insects, rocks and minerals. These rare grassland plant species are in danger due to the invasion of Virginia Pines. Currently, the park is working on a five year project to remove 1,000 acres of pines to help clear the area so it can return to the natural serpentine habitat.
The park features seven miles of pedestrian trails. Horses and cyclists are not allowed on the trails due to the sensitive nature of the area. The park also has a visitor center which has an exhibit on the nature, culture, and history of the area. The visitor center is open Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (weather permitting). Sunday through Friday, the visitor center is open based on staff availability. Call 410-922-3044 to confirm current hours.
