From the trailhead sign at the parking area, Wabasso Lake Trail immediately enters the fir forest with its lush undergrowth. The trail is easy to follow as it does a few short ups and downs, but is basically flat. Around the 1.0 mile mark, there are some open areas that have great views of the surrounding mountains. The trail then returns to the forest for about another 0.75 miles.

At the 1.8 mile mark, the Wabasso Lake Trail emerges from the forest at the marshy southeast end of Wabasso Lake. Wabasso Lake is a small, pretty, quiet lake formed by beaver dams. From here, with mountain views, the trail circles around the west side of the lake, along the lakeshore at the edge of the forest.

Reaching the northeast corner of the lake at the 2.35 mile mark, Wabasso Lake Trail veers left and leaves the lake behind as it re-enters the forest. A small creek is soon crossed and the trail ends at a trail junction after 2.5 miles. At this trail junction one can continue on and climb to Skyline Trail by going right (southeast), or go left (northwest) to ride to Valley of the Five Lakes.
