Need to Know

Rock falls are common along this route, watch for boulders on the trail. Bighorn sheep can often be seen hanging out on the steep canyon walls across the gorge.

Description

This trail is truly *gorges*! It's a section of the old New Mexico State Road 570 that was closed after a landslide buried part of it with rocks and debris. From the Taos Valley Overlook trailhead at the end of County Road 110, look for some boulders blocking the entrance of the trail from motor vehicle traffic.

The trail heads beneath basaltic outcrops above the Rio Pueblo and continues descending southwest towards the Junction Bridge and Orilla Verde Recreation Area. Most of the trail is a wide dirt road. The section where the landslide occurred is narrower and rocky, some hiking may be required to navigate this before exiting into the campgrounds by the bridge, where State Road 570 continues towards Pilar.
