Description

Right from the beginning, you're hit with two very short but very steep climbs. Several other portions of this trail will require hiking for all but the most fit riders. Hang a left at the first fork, and keep on climbing through the rocks and occasional wash crossings until you crest the hill just below the towers. With a few shade trees, this is a good place for a breather. There are also great views for a photo op.

As you begin the descent, there are a few switchbacks with blind turns. Turn left at the fence as you cross into Tonto National Forest proper. Shortly after the fence, there's another fork that looks like you should go left, but don't—it's a dead end. Go against instinct and turn right to head uphill. It's only 50 feet or so until you actually turn left for the real downhill section.

Watch out for the soccer-ball-sized rocks that litter the trail. As far as downhill goes, it doesn't get much better than this! Both technical and flowy, berms help to keep the speed up. Keep an eye out for the overgrowth, as there are some bushes with cacti growing beside (or interwoven with) them. Arms and legs be warned!
