Description

Grizzly Flat Rd. drops from Mt. Lukens Truck Trail #3N27 all the way to Grizzly Flats, a remote, rarely-used trail camp on the Big Tujunga side of Mt. Lukens. From there, the Grizzly Flats Trail continues down into Big Tujunga Creek. The portion of this road between the intersection with Hoyt Mountain Road and Grizzly Flats is rarely used.

If you're climbing Mt. Lukens Truck Trail #3N27 from the Fire Station and want some variety, take Grizzly Flat Rd. to the intersection with Hoyt Mountain Road and either continue straight onto Hoyt or go right for the Upper Dark Canyon Trail. Both end on the Angeles Crest Hwy 2, which you can then descend back to the Fire Station.

A fire access road, Grizzly Flats Rd. cuts a wide bench in the steep flank of Mt. Lukens. The trail you'll follow is a snaky, smooth line that meanders across the road, avoiding cinderblock-like boulders, downed trees, and the occasional landslide. Overgrowth can make the trail quite narrow at times. The shadier contours of the mountain have tall pine trees, while the sunnier and lower sections are a similar chaparral to what you might find way down in Arroyo Seco.

A wide section of Grizzly Flats gives leave to enjoy the vastness of the Angeles National Forest.

Most of Grizzly Flat Road is in fact gentle, nontechnical singletrack. Maps say the steep Dark Canyon Trail branches off of it near the bottom, but I couldn't locate it.

All of the nice flowing sections of the upper part of Grizzly have been bulldozed and is barely rideable due to all of soft sand dozer tracks. So sad 6mi — 2h 00m
