Overview

A rugged and awesome loop through the Dragoon Mountains. This loop features a bit of hike-a-bike, a little sand, dirt roads, and spectacular scenery. This is an good adventure ride. Cochise Trail #279 is remote. Don't expect to see anyone else or have any phone coverage.

Description

I started this ride at the parking area for Sheepshead at the end of USFS Road 4804, but the loop could be started at any access point.

Head north on USFS Road 687 (West Stronghold Road) until it ends way up in the west side canyon. Shortly before connecting with USFS Road 688, you may choose the short detour to see Council Rocks. Follow the well-tracked common trail from the lot for a short walk to the petroglyphs and grinding stone area from Mogollon people who used to inhabit the area.

Back on the road, turn east onto USFS Road 688. The trail over Stronghold Divide requires a bit of hike-a-biking but the downhill heading east is golden.

Before you get to the east side campground, head right/south on the little-used Cochise Trail #279 that gains a saddle (a bit more HAB), then goes down a wash to meet up with Middlemarch Canyon Trail #277, which continues onto USFS Road 4388.

Turn right onto Middlemarch Road and climb up over the pass and head down to USFS Road 687 (West Stronghold Road). This area was recently saved from "Recommended Wilderness" status, thus preserving our right to ride here.

I loved it, but it is not easy! 80% gravel road, 10% techy riding, 10% gnarly hike a bike. I saw no one all day- on a beautiful Saturday! — 7h 30m

Advanced trail for biking. All-mountain bike recommended. Very beautiful trip but lots of hike-a-bike. It was an extremely rough singletrack.

LOTS of hike a bike. Pretty views, one fun section of rideable tech, other than that not great unless you love hiking narrow drainages with your bike 20.6mi

This was much more hiking and pushing the bike uphill than riding. The good parts were really really good, but not worth it to me. My battery dies… 24.7mi
