Description

This route is roughly a 7-mile ride in total. The singletrack is roughly 4 miles in length, plus 3 or 4 miles to return (depending on whether you come back the way you came, or on the gravel road).

START: Look for the singletrack where it enters the woods on the north side of the highway ("Central Ave" a.k.a. Hwy 105), directly across from a small cemetery access driveway. Right away the rolling, twisting singletrack delves deep into a birch forest.

TRAIL: Overall, the trail is somewhat technical - not necessarily a smoothly flowing roller coaster. As the trail progresses, you'll encounter numerous quick drops and short punchy climbs while making your way to where the trail dips to a boardwalk creek-crossing. Old-school fiends will love the presence of chunky roots to rattle your bones and sap all of your speed, and the occasional log-over keeps things interesting.

The soil is a mix of typical black dirt with some sand interspersed.

END: You'll pop out of the deep, dark woods into an open clearing where the abandoned gravel road ends. It's your choice: go back the way you came, or high-tail it on the flat/straight gravel.

During the summer, you'll be lucky to catch a glimpse of the St. Louis River estuary through the thick foliage. No matter though, the cool shade of the deep tall forest compensates plenty. If you can hit it in the late fall, winter, or early spring, and keep you head up, you'll certainly catch a few breathtaking visuals. You'll have to remind yourself that you are in a city.

Trail is impassable. Downed trees and broken bridges, and lots of mud. Trails crews are working to clear the trees and shrubbery this week. 4.2mi — 1h 00m
