Description

Horse Mountain Trail is a great ride when coupled with some of its neighboring trails. It offers big views of the Lemhi Mountains across the Salmon River, Lake Mountain to the south, and the Beaverhead Mountains towering over the Lemhi River Valley in the distance. The trail has some great singletrack and some faint primitive tread, so bring your orienteering skills and use the MTB Project mobile app.

You can access the Horse Mountain Trailhead up the road from the Williams Creek Picnic Area. Continue straight up the hill, leaving the road where it bends to the left. The trail climbs steeply to a ratty old fence then drops down and crosses Williams Creek. This stream crossing can be treacherous in May and June. The trail quickly meets another fence, heads left and up at this fence and contours above the aspen grove. The trail gets better and better until it meets a flowing spring; cross the water and then immediately hike-a-bike to the left, then continue climbing on the steep, narrow trail. Use your route finding skills (or make them better!) from here to the water trough and Horse Connector as this primitive portion of the trail is often very vegetated.

Options: Horse Mountain Trail is often ridden as a larger shuttle ride with Powderhouse Gulch Trail and Williams Creek Trail Lower. A loop can be ridden with Horse Mountain Trail and the southern end of Williams Creek Trail Lower.
