Polipoli Springs is a good medium-sized loop on the southwest slopes of Haleakala. Although mostly doubletrack, it's very scenic and feature the Manane trail, a sweet section of singletrack.

The ride starts from a small parking area at the top of Boundary trail, a long drive up from Rice Memorial Park on Waipoli Rd.

The Polipoli Springs area is often covered in misty clouds by mid morning so get out early for clear skies and sun.

The drive up Waipoli Rd is steep, long and narrow but definitely worth the effort.

Starting from the access point for Boundary trail, pedal southwest along the Waipoli doubletrack. Between here and the Haleakala Ridge trail the road is mostly flat with a few mellow ups and downs.

At the intersection, the road turns sharply left and climbs steadily and occassionaly steeply to a three way intersection. Stay left to access the top of Mamane.

Dive into Mamane on the left side of the Skyline doubletrack, looking forward to some mountain singletrack that descends through a cloud forest.

The upper end beings in low shrubs and grass slopes with lots of whoops and turns. The fun factor is high with plenty of opportunities to catch air.

The middle section of the trail transitions to a bit more technical riding with some loose cobble and small drops. The tree cover also changes and you'll find yourself riding through big bushy pine trees.

The lower reaches are the most technical with extended sections of rocks and boulders. The forest is perhaps the most beautiful with tall trees and small pockets of meadows.

Manane ends on the Waipoli doubletrack. Turn right pedal back to the start of the ride.
