Trail Boss: Rattlin’ Run Earns Its Double Black Diamond Rating

The hype is real on this technically demanding western Virginia trail

I’ve been traveling to Roanoke, VA over the past several years for trials demos, but it wasn’t until very recently that I had the opportunity to ride in the nearby Carvins Cove Trail System. After sampling some fun and burly downhill routes like the Gauntlet and Buck, I still had to check out the trail I’d heard the most buzz about.

Locals describe Rattlin’ Run as an absolutely brutal trail with some unrideable sections, which made it the perfect candidate for a Trail Boss episode. On an unseasonably warm day this past fall, I was finally able to check out and tackle Ratlin’ Run. It’s an impressive trail with great variety that took some time to master.

Want to take on Rattlin’ Run and Carvins? Here’s how to live like a local:

Plan your ride over a cup of joe and some delicious country cooking at the local favorite, Sweet Donkey Coffee Shop. The $7.99 breakfast buffet ought to be a sufficient source of fuel for the day’s adventure.

Once you’ve had your fill of singletrack, check out Local Roots for a great farm-to-table meal or Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Joint for its awesome beer selection and casual food.
