Avoid when wet. This trail gets especially muddy when wet. You may wish to avoid the park during hunting season. Refer to ODNR hunting calendars for gun season dates (hunting is allowed in Strouds Run State Park).

Description

Access Hickory Trail from the top of the Dow Lake Dam along State Route 50. Soon after entering the trail you'll encounter a grassy clearing close to the water. Often there is a swing (of unknown origin) in the tree, a fun spot for photos or a snack/water stop. Hickory Trail is mainly doubletrack and when dry it's a great trail for introducing young or new riders to the sport.

Although the trail is relatively easy and it is easy to carry a lot of speed, because it is so easy it is also one of the more heavily used trails in the park, including lots of families, trail runners and dog walkers. So it's a good idea to keep your speed in check and anticipate meeting others on the trail.

Hickory Trail can get really muddy during periods of rainy weather. There are several muddy dips to ride through, even in dry weather, and a few steep climbs and descents.

Hickory Trail has just enough obstacles to keep kids interested but not enough climbing to crush their souls.
