All routes in the Steamboat Bike Park are downhill only and require a lift pass.

Overview

The Tenderfoot to E-Z Rider route is a great introduction to the gravity experience at Steamboat. This is your best option if you're wanting to check out the downhill scene and get a feel for the features that characterize this type of trail.

Starting with a lift ride up to Thunderhead, the route descends just over 2,100' with excellent views of the Steamboat Valley.

Need to Know

In addition to some serious vertical, the downhill routes in the Steamboat Bike Park are long. A full-suspension bike with a good amount of travel is preferable. You should also seriously consider body armor like elbow, knee or shin pads and/or a full face helmet.

The Steamboat Bike Shop at the base of the mountain is full service and includes bike and gear rental. In addition, they can provide guides and instructors to find your way down the mountain or brush up on your skills.

Description

The ride starts on Tenderfoot with some mellow sweeping turns and easy rolling berms on wider trail.

After the initial drop the trail travels through a large aspen grove and then breaks out into the open with huge views of the valley. After passing a option boulder feature the route drops a bit more than intersects with Rawhide for a brief time before continuing down the mountain.

From here the route descends steadily with some fast sections followed by a series of switchbacks before crossing the main mountain road.

The next section is perhaps the most scenic. The trail narrows a bit and becomes more technical with tighter turns and more rocks in the tread. You'll also enjoy some large expanses of black slickrock and monolithic boulders along and above the route.

Continue down many downhill-style switchbacks through a heavily logged section until you bottom out at the Thunderhead Lift. To continue the route, continue down Wrangler Gulch.

Wrangler Gulch is the fast, luge-style connection from Tenderfoot to E-Z Rider.

The route starts at a major intersection with multiple trails. Be sure to stay to the left of the fence. You'll be screaming down the mountain from the get-go, rolling from side to side on the banked edges of the trail. Wrangler goes quickly, before you know it, you'll be at the top of E-Z Rider.

E-Z Rider is the mellow, but extremely fun finishing option to this ride.

From the intersection the route meanders across the bottom of the ski area with nice carving turns. The grade is slight and the fun factor is high!
