“A great afternoon ride destination along Middle Mountain and Hurricane Mountain on the Pinhoti.”
— Conrad Fernandez on Jun 27, 2013
OverviewExperience the beauty of the Pinhoti without having to ride the entire trail system. This loop takes you through Middle Mountain and a part of Hurricane Mountain, so you'll get in a long 1.5 mile climb to Middle Mountain. Then ride through some rocky sections on the ridge of Middle and Hurricane. You'll finish with a nice 2 mile downhill along scenic Stover Creek and rock outcroppings of Middle Mountain.
DescriptionAt the Forest Service Road 207A, you'll start a 1.5 Mile Climb to Middle Mountain. This is a wide gravel road that is fairly packed down. Get into a steady pedal rhythm and you'll make it to the top without stopping.
At the top, take a breather and enjoy some of the fresh mountain air.
The FS road continues down to Swamp Creek. You'll take a right onto the singletrack of the Pinhoti. This is ridge of Middle Mountain. The trail is a little rocky, but if you can keep moving you'll ride over these rocks.
Ride along the ridge of Middle Mtn to a couple more miles to Hurricane. This is the kind of terrain the Snake racers endure for 34 miler / 17 miler routes. I have an appreciation of the skill and fitness of these riders.
At Hurricane, drop down into Stover Creek along FS 207. The last 2 miles is gradual downhill, so you can pick up some speed here. Stay in control of your bike on this gravel road. You'll cross Stover Creek about 1/8 mile before you get back to your car. Sometimes it's deep enough to take a after ride dip.
History & BackgroundThis is a local favorite mainly because it was one of the few places we could ride years ago. Now that we have Raisin Woods, Enterprise South, White Oak Mountain, 5-Points, Raccoon Mountain, etc., it has not gotten a much traffic, but we still love this trail loop. It's still a favorite because it offers a mixture of different challenges to all level of riders. Who doesn't like climbing 1.5 miles just to get to the actual trail?
