Overview

There are ~12 miles of mountain biking trails at John Bryan State Park. The trails were built and are maintained by the Miami Valley Mountain Bike Association (MVMBA) in partnership with the Park.

Need to Know

A number of races are held here. There are mtb races, CX races held nearby (occupying the same parking), and cross country running races.

All users are asked to sign in at the kiosk which also contains the latest information on trail activities.

Before or after your ride, be sure to stop in the nearby town of Yellow Springs to enjoy one of the many artsy shops, get some fresh beer, or a pizza from a local shop. A few miles north of the park on US 68 is Young's Jersey Dairy, which also has a full restaurant. This is a great place to go post-ride for a summer treat.

The Little Miami Scenic Trail passes near the park. You can use it to get to the park from Springfield, Xenia, or connect to it from one of Dayton's bikeways so you can leave the car at home entirely.

Description

Powerline is 2 miles with tight twisty turns and long runs, a boardwalk, some creek crossings and a small ramp. It's perfect for honing bike balance & turning skills. Directly across from Powerline is Abracadabra which has about 2 miles of mostly flat and open easy riding. It has one medium-sized ramp (with a bypass around it), a boardwalk and small creek crossings.

Directly across from Abracadabra is Great Scott. This is the longest trail at 4.5 miles and has some small climbs, creek crossings, boardwalks and the biggest ramp (with a bypass around it). From Great Scott, connect to the Frankenlight Loop, and return to Great Scott for the ride back to the trailhead. All trails have some log piles and the creek crossings may be wet or dry depending on the weather.

Trails are marked with signs and there are maps at the kiosk at the trailhead which connects all four trails. The Arboretum Loop also enables riders to bail early or skip a segment if so desired.

Watch for arrows showing the recommended route at intersections. The recommended route is to start clockwise on Arboretum Loop, take the first left onto Powerline, cross Arboretum to continue on Abracadabra, cross Arboretum again to hit Great Scott, continue on the Frankenlight Loop, and finish on Great Scott to the parking lot.

History & Background

The first trail, Powerline, was constructed by the Wittenberg University Cycling Club and opened in April 2002, coinciding with the formation of the Miami Valley Mountain Bike Association, which took over stewardship for the trail. Abracadabra and Great Scott opened in April 2003. Frankenlight was added later and Powerline was also lengthened between 2004 and 2006. A Skills Park opened in 2006.

My favorite section of the trail here - light always amazing through this part of the forest. Wish I could take credit for lining up the trees at the bend in the trail - just dumb luck.
